Heat makes Charleston suspend horse carriage tours 2nd day
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Officials in Charleston have suspended horse-drawn carriage tours for the second day in a row because of the heat.
City spokesman Jack O’Toole said Charleston’s Director of Livability and Tourism stopped the tours around 1 p.m. Tuesday after the temperature rose from 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34.4 Celsius) to 98 degrees (36.7 Celsius) in 18 minutes.
Charleston carefully monitors temperatures and humidity for the safety of the horses. Officials also suspended carriage tours for several hours Monday.
The high in Charleston on Sunday and Monday was 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius) — the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the city in May.
