Penticton poet waxes political in ‘The Cut’

PENTICTON – It’s Shane Koyczan at his political best.

Koyczan, who is from Penticton, takes Prime Minister Stephen Harper to task in this piece written for the Imagine Oct. 20 campaign, organized by Dan Mangan in association with leadnow.ca.

Likening the election campaign to a job interview, Koyczan says the Conservative leader's approach to avoiding interviews and refusing to answer questions from the press makes him think the press should “just ignore him” and only pay attention to those that show up for the interview.

“They stole the last election. They’re not even supposed to be in power right now,” he says, prior to launching his piece called “The Cut.”

“We remember the cuts – how could we not, most of them are still bleeding. You treat this country like it’s a yard sale,” Koyczan recites, as he discusses the many cuts to programs that provide benefits to mainstream Canadians.

“At one million dollars a year for a decade, you rent Pandas and pretend that they’re Care Bears,” he recites.

“You talk about fiscal responsibility, but launch the largest and most expensive election in Canadian history.”

“You are the result of our inaction, the abscess tooth of our apathy,” he says, concluding “making cuts is the worst part of our job, but even so, we’re taking back the country, and we’re very sorry, but you have to go.”

Leadnow.ca is a website devoted to running campaigns on major issues of our time, engaging people in participatory decision making and organizing in communities across Canada. It is currently running the  campaign “Let’s vote together to end 10 years of Harper rule.”

  1. My good God! If he was really all these things he would never have been selected to receive the World’s Statesman of the Year! And hmmmm… Does anyone remember a Paul Marten who refused to go to the events organized commemorating the WW’s unless the leaders of the other parties went with him which made them late arriving and missed these events? There isn’t enough time and space here to remind you of the multitude of things the other parties and their leaders have gotten away with. Go do some reading and inform yourselves with real data that actually bears some credence and that really matters. Don’t waste people’s time with these comments that would make for some good story lines on one of the soap operas…..

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
