Hit and run in Vernon sends cyclist to hospital, knocks out power

VERNON – RCMP are on the hunt for a suspect after a man on a bicycle was hit by a vehicle in Vernon early this morning.

The cyclist was hit on 43 Street, near 25 Avenue, just after 5 a.m., Oct. 11, according to RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

“The vehicle had struck a bicyclist, then left the roadway and severed a power pole, causing a large portion of Vernon to lose power,” Noseworthy says in a media release. “The adult male bicyclist was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

“The occupants of the vehicle left the area prior to police arrival.”

Most of the power has been restored. B.C. Hydro estimates 20 customers left without power in the 4200-block of 25A Avenue and the 4200-block of 25 Avenue should be back online by 12:30 p.m.

Noseworthy says 43 Street between 25 Avenue and 30 Street will be closed until the power pole and equipment is repaired.
