ELECTION 2015: UPDATE: Eye on the South Okanagan-West Kootenay race

PENTICTON – As one of the ridings to undergo a big change heading into the 2015 federal election we can guarantee one thing after tonight — there will be a new member of Parliament for the South Okanagan-West Kootenay riding.

The Okanagan-Coquihalla and the British Columbia Southern Interior ridings were split and boundaries redrawn in 2012 to form the South Okanagan-West Kootenay and Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola ridings.

Conservative Marshall Neufeld easily won his party's candidacy for the new riding in July 2014 while Liberal Connie Denesiuk went uncontested. NDP candidate Richard Cannings was named a few months later while Green Samantha Troy and independent Brian Gray were named this year.

With a riding population of just over 112,000, there were nearly 90,700 registered voters heading into election day. More than 14,000 people voted in the advanced voting.

By 9:20 p.m., more than two hours after the polls closed, Cannings was declared the winner of the South Okanagan-West Kootenay.
