Calgary police constable wounded in Tuesday shooting recovering in hospital

CALGARY – A Calgary police officer who was shot this week is slowly recovering in hospital.

Const. Jordan Forget suffered two gunshot wounds on Tuesday and has a collapsed lung.

Les Kaminski of the Calgary Police Association says he has visited Forget twice in hospital and he seems to be doing well.

He says the five-year veteran of the police service is resilient and tough.

Kaminski says Forget is being supported by his family, other police and by lots of well wishes from the public.

He is hopeful Forget will make a full recovery.

“He has still got a great sense of humour,” Kaminski said Thursday.

“He is doped up to help with the pain, but he is very coherent and I think he realizes what the consequences could have been.”

Police have said Forget was shot during an investigation into a string of crimes that included a robbery at a convenience store, a carjacking and a suspected break and enter.

Officers found a man between two houses and he started firing at police.

The body of the suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was later found in the ruins of burned garage.

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances of the man’s death.

It is the first time a police officer has been shot on the streets of Calgary in more than 20 years.

Police have not released Forget’s name, but his identity has been widely reported in the media. (CFFR, The Canadian Press)
