Penticton council to look at utility rate review tonight

PENTICTON – Penticton city council will be discussing the results of a rate review of the city’s utilities tonight.

The rate review was undertaken earlier this year and looks at how the rates for electric, water and sewer services compare with other municipalities and service providers such as BC Hydro and Fortis.

The city also wants to find out if the present rates will sustain future like infrastructure replacement costs, accroding to communications officer Simone Blais. One of the key recommendations from the review is to set rates for all three utilities for the next five years to help customers plan for their future.

The Penticton Public Library will also be presenting their strategic plan for 2015-2018 to council this evening.

Council will also look at a baby friendly initiative for the city, and adoption of an amendment to add casino use as part of the indoor amusement, entertainment and recreation uses bylaw.

The adoption of a new major developments economic investment zone for the entire city also comes before council for adoption tonight.

The council meeting begins with a public hearing at 6 p.m.

Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
