Poll: More Brazilians prefer acting president over Rousseff

RIO DE JANEIRO – A new poll finds that half of Brazilians prefer acting President Michel Temer over Dilma Rousseff who was suspended in May pending an impeachment trial.

The Datafolha polling firm says 32 per cent of those surveyed want Rousseff back. Eighteen per cent didn’t show a preference, didn’t know or said they wanted new elections.

The poll released Saturday afternoon also says that only 14 per cent of Brazilians approve of Temer’s performance. And 31 per cent think his administration is bad or very bad.

Before her suspension, Rousseff had even worse approval ratings. Datafolha says 65 per cent thought she was doing a bad job.

The impeachment trial that could make Temer president until 2018 is expected in late August.

Datafolha interviewed 2,792 voters in 171 cities. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
