Central Okanagan curbside yard waste collection deadline looms

CENTRAL OKANAGAN – As leaves continue to drop across the Central Okanagan, the deadline for the final curbside yard waste collection of the year is fast approaching.

As of Monday, Nov. 30, the Regional District will no longer be collecting green bins, however landfills in Glenmore and West Kelowna will continue to accept up to 250 kilograms of yard waste free of charge.

Yard waste, which is collected every other week starting in March, includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, plant trimmings, prunings, pine needles and cones, pumpkins and fruit droppings, which are all permitted in all green bins and at both landfills. Items not permitted include rocks, animal waste, plastic bags, dirt, sod, tree stumps, kitchen and food waste, tissue, landscape fabric, flower pots and landscape edging.

All material must fit within the carts completely with lids closed. Bins should be parked on the street, with the wheels against the curb, if there is one, or just off the roadway on the shoulder. Do not block bike lanes or sidewalks and leave at least one metre, or three feet, of space between carts.
