Calgary police shooting of man after hit and run of cyclist being reviewed

CALGARY – Investigators are reviewing why an officer shot and wounded a man after police say a cyclist was deliberately hit in downtown Calgary.

Police say no officers were injured Tuesday but the suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the cyclist was in serious condition and undergoing surgery.

As the cyclist was being helped by EMS, police allege the suspect returned to the scene and drove a stolen black SUV directly at officers when they tried to stop him.

One officer had to dive into a police vehicle for cover, then another officer fired his weapon, wounding the suspect.

Calgary police Chief Roger Chaffin described the actions of the driver as “shocking, wanton recklessness.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which reviews all police-involved shootings, has several officers working on the case.

“Our investigators were actively working through the night,” ASIRT spokeswoman Lynn Neufeld said Wednesday.

“They have had a briefing and they are back out on the streets doing investigative work.”

Neufeld said that includes talking to individuals who may have witnessed the altercation.

There’s no word on how long the investigation will take.
