Kamloops seniors centre asking to serve alcohol longer on Sundays

KAMLOOPS – The Centre for Seniors’ Information Activity Centre is asking the city to extend its Sunday liquor licence from 9 p.m. until midnight.

Every Sunday night the seniors’ activity centre hosts dances and executive assistant Brandi Allen explains the dances go until at least 11 p.m. so they’d like to keep the bar open until the event ends. Monday through Saturday the activity centre’s liquor license extends until 1 a.m.

Along with the extended hours, the centre is asking to more than triple their occupancy from 110 to 350 patrons. The centre has recently bought the store front next door to their existing space in the Brock Shopping Centre.

Executive director Brenda Prevost said previously the expansion is part of new social programs to be offered at the centre. They have recently built a stage to host performances and hope, with the larger space, to regularly host weddings, along with anniversary and birthday parties.

The centre’s liquor licence extension will come to council Tuesday, Nov. 17. The city must sign-off on the on the application before it is ultimately granted by the province. City staff and RCMP have no objections regarding noise or see the extension as a safety risk to the neighbourhood.
