Mother: Chicago school guard handcuffed 6-year-old daughter

CHICAGO – The mother of a 6-year-old girl says a Chicago Public Schools security guard handcuffed her daughter, and she’s planning to sue the district.

Marlena Wordlow tells WLS-TV (http://abc7.ws/2bk1eo5 ) the incident occurred in March. She says the security guard at Fernwood Elementary School disciplined her daughter for taking a piece of candy by handcuffing her and leaving her alone for more than an hour near the school’s boilers.

Wordlow’s attorney, Jeffrey Granich, says the lawsuit alleges excessive force, false imprisonment and emotional distress.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Chicago Public Schools says the guard has been fired and a “do not hire” note was placed in his personnel file. The district says it took immediate action.
