Venezuela opposition denounces crackdown ahead of summit

PORLAMAR, Venezuela – Venezuela’s opposition says authorities are cracking down on its members on the Caribbean island of Margarita as thousands of delegates arrive for a summit of the non-aligned movement.

The meeting of the Cold War-era group of 120 nations kicks off Tuesday amid heavy security and heightened tensions after President Nicolas Maduro’s opponents vowed to denounce any government abuses to foreign delegates.

The opposition Democratic Unity alliance says police searched the home of an opposition mayor Monday and called in several other people for questioning.

Last week a prominent journalist was arrested after publishing videos of Maduro being confronted by pot-banging protesters during a recent visit.

The opposition-controlled congress plans to try to hold a symbolic session on Margarita coinciding with the summit.
