Greater Vernon voters say ‘YES’ to a new arena

VERNON – Greater Vernon will get a brand new, multi-million dollar arena, voters decided today.

The ‘yes’ vote for a new ice sheet to replace the aging Civic Arena was victorious in the Saturday, Nov. 28 referendum. According to preliminary results, 4,265 votes were cast in favour of the new arena, and 3,331 against.

The referendum result gives local government permission to borrow up to $13.2 million for the new arena, which will be built at Kal Tire Place, bringing that facility’s number of ice sheets up to two.

According to the North Okanagan Regional District, the annual cost for a home assessed at $350,000 will be $24 a year for 20 years.

The Civic Arena is expected to be used for another three years while the new ice sheet is under construction.
