Explosions targeting health insurers rock Colombia’s capital

BOGOTA – The commander of police in Colombia’s capital says three simultaneous explosions have hit the offices of two health care insurers in Bogota. There are no injuries.

Gen. Hoover Penilla tells Blu Radio that the low-impact explosions took place before dawn on Tuesday. At least two of the blasts happened in the interior of the buildings, limiting the damage.

One of the blasts took place in the heart of Bogota’s financial district.

Penilla says it’s likely that the attack was carried out by the same unidentified group that carried out a similar attack in April at the offices of Cafesalud, one of the companies targeted again.

Colombia’s struggling private health insurance system has been the focus of longstanding labour disputes and complaints by patients about deteriorating service.
