Global Witness says 2 campaigners expelled from Congo

KINSHASA, Congo – A London-based organization that campaigns for environmental rights says two of its employees have been expelled from Congo after being accused of trying to incite a revolt.

Global Witness on Thursday disputed the allegations it said were made by Congo Environment Minister Robert Bopolo Bogeza at a press conference in Kinshasa.

It said the employees were detained Tuesday and accused of “encouraging communities to rise up against the logging companies that are operating in their forests.”

Congolese officials could not be reached Thursday afternoon.

Alexandra Pardal of Global Witness said the group has been working in Congo since 2007. She said the two employees were on a “routine trip” meeting with communities living near logging sites to see if they had received benefits promised by logging companies.
