No day off for Soupateria volunteers in Penticton

PENTICTON – While many people in Penticton took today off, not so for the volunteers at Penticton Soupateria.

They were kept busy through the noon hour serving clients at the Martin Street kitchen, Dec. 28.

Soupateria cook Pat Witzraney says the kitchen has been serving a few less people in the last week, down from winter averages of approximately 135 or so daily. He thinks the drop is due to the generosity of the community.

“In the past few weeks, there have been a number of church groups providing similar services, including hamper programs. The community is extremely generous. It’s a combined effort amongst various groups, and that’s what makes this community special,” Witzraney says.

Snow over the weekend may also have restricted those with mobility issues, he says.

“I used to come every day. It’s a good place to eat. You always get food, and sometimes I get some to go,” Soupateria client Bob Dean says.

Monday’s menu consisted of chili, vegetable soup, a sandwich and a number of different salads. Dessert included trays of baked goods including muffins and donuts.

Witzraney says the volunteers are a dedicated group who really enjoy what they do, and often tell him they get way more out of volunteering than they put in.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
