NEW ORLEANS – Former NFL star Darren Sharper entered a not guilty plea Monday in his first court appearance in Louisiana to face charges that he drugged women in order to rape them.
However that is considered a legal formality since a magistrate judge can’t accept a felony guilty plea.
Sharper already has pleaded guilty or no-contest to related charges in three other states.
Sharper, who was part of the New Orleans Saints team that won the Super Bowl in 2010, has been jailed since charges were filed in Los Angeles in early 2014.
A multi-state plea deal was announced last month. He is expected to spend at least another nine years in prison.
It’s unclear when he will formally enter the Louisiana pleas under the agreement announced last month.
