Impact’s Oduro tweets that fans made racism sounds during CONCACAF match

MONTREAL – Montreal Impact midfielder Dominic Oduro says fans of the Costa Rican club Alajuelense at a CONCACAF Champions League match directed racist sounds toward black players.

The Impact will file a complaint to CONCACAF about racism and fans allegedly throwing objects at their players during a match Tuesday night in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Oduro, who is from Ghana, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: “So sad that in this generation some fans still make monkey noises when black players are playing the game. Shame on all #alajuelense fans”

Alajuelense beat Montreal 4-2 in the semifinal second leg but the Impact won the round 4-4 on away goals on Tuesday night. They became the first Canadian team to advance to the final.

There was a raucous atmosphere for the match. There were reports of coins, shoes and other objects thrown at Montreal players.

Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush said he was hit by a coin. He wrote on Twitter: “Keep throwing your coins at me.”

Broadcaster and former Impact player Lloyd Barker tweeted: “Dear #idacr fans: throwing coins-cans-shoes and making monkey sounds while hurling insults is not supporting, it’s DISGRACEFUL”
