Greek ruling party lawmaker attacked, hospitalized

ATHENS, Greece – Greek lawmaker Petros Konstantineas of the ruling left-wing Syriza party was attacked by far-rightists Sunday night after attending a soccer match with his son and was hospitalized with non-threatening injuries, a fellow legislator said.

George Katrougalos, who is also the alternate foreign minister for European affairs, told The Associated Press that about 30 people attacked Konstantineas in the southwestern city of Kalamata.

The state news agency AMNA said Konstantineas recognized his attackers as far-right supporters.

Police reported they detained five suspects.

All major parties condemned the attack.

Konstantineas, a 40-year-old baker and retired soccer referee, was elected to Parliament in 2015.
