David I. Kertzer’s “The Pope and Mussolini” wins Pulitzer Prize for Biography-Autobiography

NEW YORK, N.Y. – David I. Kertzer’s “The Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe” has won the Pulitzer Prize for biography-autobiography.

Judges cited the book as “an engrossing dual biography that uses recently opened Vatican archives to shed light on two men who exercised nearly absolute power over their realms.”

The finalists were Thomas Brothers’ “Louis Armstrong: Master of Modernism” and Stephen Kotkin’s “Stalin: Volume I: Paradoxes of Power, 1878-1928.”
