MONTREAL – The man charged in Quebec’s 2012 election-night shooting has reached a payment deal with his lawyer.

Alan Guttman says Richard Henry Bain will pay him $40,000 immediately and another $1,000 a month for the next 27 months.

Bain’s first-degree murder trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks, beginning in September.

He is charged in the slaying of lighting technician Denis Blanchette outside a Montreal nightclub on Sept. 4, 2012, as then-Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois was toasting her party’s election win.

He also faces two counts of attempted murder and several weapons-related charges.

At least one property belonging to Bain was sold recently and Guttman said Wednesday he is confident the money issue will be resolved.

”The public has nothing to worry about,” Guttman said at the Montreal courthouse Wednesday. ”Mr. Bain, I think he is an honourable man. He doesn’t want the taxpayers to pay one cent for him.

”He gave his word to his brother that he would pay him and he’s paying him every month and he’ll do the same thing for his legal fees.”
