Hockey Day in Canada makes for busy long weekend in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops has a busy weekend ahead of it. Hockey Day in Canada culminates tomorrow and Family Day activities leave lots of options to get out in the community.

Hockey Day in Canada will be held down at the Sandman Centre for most of Saturday, Feb. 6, with national broadcast starting at 9 a.m. at Sandman Centre.

Broadcaster Ron MacLean will host the show as it runs throughout the day with other events, including hockey clinics and hockey games. It finishes with the Kamloops Blazers taking on the Edmonton Oil Kings and the broadcast of the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks game.

It’s not all hockey this weekend, though. Skiing is also an option with the Overlanders Ski Club holding a Family Day on Monday. You can ski for free with a donation to the Kamloops Food Bank. Stake Lake trails are open for snowshoes and cross country. Gear is available for rental.

Sun Peaks Resort has a couple extra events going on as well, with a Family Day celebration on Sunday which includes face painting, a dance party and a chance to race a friend or family member. The racing goes from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and the celebrations runs 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

For those looking to stay indoors the Tournament Capital Centre is holding its Gran Fondo, a stationary cycling fundraiser for MS, and Family Day Festival on Monday. The festival includes wheelchair basketball, an obstacle course and a science demonstrations from the BIG Little Science Centre.
