Popular bakery, park clubhouse damaged in separate Vancouver blazes

VANCOUVER – Vancouver firefighters had to cope with two large blazes on Wednesday night and one has badly damaged a busy french bakery in the city’s popular Granville Island district.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Capt. Gabe Roder says the accidental blaze at La Baguette Bakery started in an oven just before 8 p.m.

He says there is substantial damage to the bakery, which is in a building apart from the heritage warehouses where the produce, deli, curio and other shops are located.

Barely one hour later Roder says crews were called to a separate incident in south-central Vancouver.

A deliberately set fire has caused more than $100,000 damage to the caretaker/clubhouse facility at Columbia Park, not far from the Oakridge shopping centre.

Roder says no one was hurt in either the clubhouse arson or the bakery fire.
