Youth sent to hospital after hit by senior at a crosswalk

A 14-year-old girl sustained multiple injuries after being hit by a vehicle on a crosswalk last night in Westsyde.

"Looks like she had possibly a broken rib, lots of scrapes, cuts and bruises," said Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned. "She did take a blow to the head and we're keeping her for observation."

RCMP responded to the scene around 9 p.m. last night after a driver in his 70s failed to see at least the one of three girls crossing the road.

The vehicle was traveling north while the girls crossed the intersection of Westsyde Road and Grant Road.

Learned said there are multiple scenarios police are considering to determine the cause of the crash, however some possibilities have been ruled out.

"Looking at the ongoing factors surrounding the crash, alcohol and speed are not factors," Learned said.

Learned also ruled out road conditions, weather conditions and said crosswalk lights were working at the time.

The girl was taken to Royal Inland Hospital and the driver, who remained on scene, was 'extremely shaken up.'

"This is one of those occurrences, that really, for all reasons, shouldn't have happened," Learned said.
