New tax to support museums, arts wins approval in Flint area

FLINT, Mich. – Voters in the Flint area have voted in favour of a new tax to support museums and the arts.

The Genesee County arts millage was on the ballot Tuesday. Supporters said the Flint area should be known for more than water and infrastructure problems.

The tax of just under one mill is estimated to cost $48 per home. The money will support the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint Institute of Music, the Sloan Longway museum and planetarium and other groups. Local residents will get free admission or discounted tickets to the venues.

Other arts organizations will be able to apply for grants.

In the Detroit area, a regional tax supports the Detroit Institute of Arts.
