Northern California waterside hamlet seeks solution to thousands of bicycling tourists

SAUSALITO, Calif. – Sausalito is a picturesque harbour town across the bay from San Francisco that can attract 1,000 bicycle-riding tourists a day, which is a boon for local businesses but a growing concern for officials.

The city council is considering imposing expensive fines for illegal parking and implementing an identification system for bicyclists in an attempt to keep downtown sidewalks clear for pedestrians.

The Marin Independent Journal reported Saturday (http://tinyurl.com/kb8nfmb ) that the city council last week delayed enacting the new bicycle policy after hearing from numerous critics of the plan. Each summer, an increasing number of tourists rent bicycles in San Francisco and peddle them over the Golden Gate Bridge or take a ferry to Sausalito. Officials say the number of tourists has doubled in each of the last three years.
