Tanker hits 3 moored sailboats on Maine-New Hampshire border
NEW CASTLE, N.H. – The U.S. Coast Guard is working to determine why an oil tanker hit three moored sailboats in a river on the Maine-New Hampshire border.
The collision happened Wednesday at the mouth of the Piscataqua (pih-SKAT’-ah-kwah) River near Kittery, Maine, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Officials say the 477-foot Chem Venus tanker was carrying a load of used vegetable oil and a variety of other industrial chemicals.
No injuries or pollution have been reported. No one was aboard the sailboats at the time.
The Coast Guard says the oil tanker sustained damage to its bow, causing it to take on water. Officials have stabilized the flooding. Divers are expected to survey the damage early Thursday morning.
The sailboats were also damaged, but remained afloat.
