Bus-truck accident kills 13 and injures 21 on highway in Dominican Republic, authorities say

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Authorities in the Dominican Republic say a highway accident involving a bus and truck killed 13 people and injured 21.

The Caribbean country’s transit agency says the cause of the accident is under investigation and hasn’t released any details on what happened. Agency spokesman Diego Pesqueira says the crash happened on a road linking the capital of Santo Domingo with the port town of Samana.

The director of the hospital in Monte Plata says it received 13 bodies. Dr. Eliezer Cruz says the dead included eight women and a 10-year-old child.

The World Health Organization said in 2013 that the Dominican Republic had the world’s second worst mortality rate from road accidents, with 41.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The South Pacific nation of Nieu had the highest rate, at 68.3.
