Calgary cabbie saves duck family from busy intersection, drives them to river

CALGARY – Calgary cabbie Urga Adunga has likely had some odd passengers in his day, but none quite so odd as the family that ended up in his back seat this week.

Adunga was driving through a busy intersection on Thursday when he noticed a mother duck and her ducklings waddling into traffic.

He pulled over and with the help of passersby, scooped up the birds and put them into the back seat of his Checker cab.

Layna Segall of Checker cabs says one person had some sort of baby snuggly that worked perfectly to harness the tiny ducklings, identified as Common Goldeneyes.

Segall says Adunga told her the ducklings settled down once their mother joined them.

Adunga then headed to the banks of the Bow River to let the ducks loose in a safe place — no charge for the cab fare, of course.

“They were so small, he had to lift each duckling out individually to follow the mom,” says Segall.
