Space for staff becoming limited at Kamloops city hall

KAMLOOPS – They are getting a little tight on space over at Kamloops city hall thanks to a burgeoning staff.

The city's chief administrative officer David Trawin says city hall is getting close to capacity but a new city hall isn't on the table.

“We don’t need an additional building, in my opinion, for awhile,” he says.

Trawin says the city is more interested in converting the space it has, rather than acquiring new buildings to house staff. He says the city may have to spend $20,000 on creating more office space in the city’s existing buildings, adding the key is being creative instead of purchasing new property.

By moving some people to different locations he says room has opened up in different departments, like the development and engineering building.

Trawin says there is a staff room on each floor of city hall, and while employees appreciate them, some of those spaces will become cubicles.

“We have to balance it out quite a bit,” he says.

He says the new RCMP building will impact staff locations as well, as there is growth in the number of crime prevention staff.

While the city owns the former Kamloops Daily News building on Seymour Street, he says there are no intentions to move staff there.
