Local police return to duty in city in southern Mexico

MEXICO CITY – The local police force in the capital of Guerrero state has returned to policing the city after having been disarmed by state police in January.

Guerrero’s state security ministry said in a statement that one municipal police officer is under arrest and 12 more under investigation in Chilpancingo after the discovery of the bodies of two men last seen in police custody.

Municipal police in Chilpancingo are suspected of being behind the men’s deaths. The victims were found in black plastic garbage bags.

The southern state of Guerrero has been plagued by drug violence for years.
