Western Mexico rattled by 6.2 magnitude offshore quake

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s western Pacific coast has been slightly rattled by a magnitude 6.2 offshore earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was centred in the Pacific Ocean about 60 miles (100 kilometres) off Mexico’s western coast. It hit at 5:51 a.m. (6:51 a.m. EDT; 1051 GMT)

The nearest large population centre in the area is the port of Manzanillo.

The head of Mexico’s civil defence agency said Tuesday the quake was only slightly felt in some towns near the coast and there were no immediate reports of damage.
