TULSA, Okla. – In a story Sept. 18 about a fatal police shooting in Tulsa, The Associated Press, relying on information provided by Tulsa police, misspelled the slain man’s first name. His name is spelled Terence Crutcher, not Terrence Crutcher.

The Tulsa Police Department has released the names of two police officers involved in the shooting death of a man on a city street.

Police on Sunday said Officer Betty Shelby shot and killed 40-year-old Terence Crutcher and Officer Tyler Turnbough fired a stun gun at Crutcher.

Shelby is on paid leave while Friday night’s shooting is under investigation.

Police previously said the fatal shot came after the stun gun was fired.

Police have said Crutcher was shot when he refused orders to put up his hands and instead reached inside his SUV, which was stopped in the street.

Police have not said whether a weapon was found. Officials said that information, along with audio and video of the incident, will be released Monday.

Tulsa police have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to help investigate the shooting death of a man by an officer.

A police news release says Police Chief Chuck Jordan contacted the department through the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tulsa and will work with the agency to investigate Friday night’s shooting death of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher.

Spokesmen for police and the Justice Department did not immediately return phone calls Sunday for additional comment.

Police have said Crutcher was shot when he refused orders to put up his hands and instead reached inside his SUV, which was stopped in the middle of a city street.

Police have not said whether a weapon was found. Officials said that information, along with audio and video of the incident, will be released Monday.
