WARREN, Maine – Two former inmates at a Maine prison say a guard ignored another inmate’s repeated requests to be moved before he was found dead.
William Jines and Jason Palmiter tell the Bangor Daily News that 28-year-old Dana Bartlett was scared of his cellmates and asked the same corrections officer three times to move him to another cell June 24.
Bartlett died that evening at Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren.
Neither Jines nor Palmiter witnessed Bartlett’s death, and officials have not released a cause of death. The Department of Corrections didn’t immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment Friday.
His fiancee says she was told in July he got into an altercation with an inmate and a guard.
Bartlett had been serving a 16-month sentence for theft and multiple driving infractions.
