Civil rights group’s convention kicks off in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – Thousands of people are flocking into Cincinnati for the NAACP’s national convention that gets underway ahead of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Leaders of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization will be joined Saturday by Cincinnati’s mayor and other regional officials for an opening press conference. The 107th NAACP convention will include a long list of speakers, workshops and entertainment, running through Wednesday. Projected attendance is more than 5,000 participants.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will speak Monday. NAACP leaders say Republican Donald Trump turned down an invitation, citing scheduling conflicts with the RNC beginning Monday on the northeast side of the state.

The convention will hear, though, from Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik), who won the state’s GOP presidential primary. He speaks Sunday evening.
