Blistering heat caps off long weekend

PENTICTON – The Canada Day weekend brought thousands of visitors to Penticton's famed beaches and Gyro Park. Sunday and Monday also had temperatures over the 30 C mark.

Lakeshore Drive was amass with people wearing brightly coloured swim trunks and bikinis. Over at Gyro Park there were dozens of tents selling things cold to eat or drink and there was always someone playing music or dancing on stage. There were pop bands, folk artists and belly dancers entertaining the mass of hot and sweaty guests sitting on lawn chairs. Available parking was almost nowhere to be seen in the city's downtown core.

Both ends of the city were well utilized. Swimmers and boaters made use of the wider beaches at Skaha Lake at the city's south end. Hundreds of riders sailing on inflatable rafts or floaties drifted down the Channel Parkway canal connecting the two lakes.

Fireworks exploded at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.
