Officials: Unexpectedly large wave washes out Jersey shore town’s fireworks display

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. – A large wave washed out the Fourth of July fireworks show in a Jersey shore community.

Seaside Heights officials say a wave ran so far up the shore on Saturday night that it soaked all the fireworks set up on the beach.

Town officials say the fireworks were set up closer to the surf than usual this year in an effort to satisfy state regulations requiring spectators be kept a specific distance away from the fireworks. They say beach erosion caused by Superstorm Sandy has made fulfilling this requirement a challenge in recent years.

Some residents and others took to social media to complain about the cancellation.

The town plans to stage a makeup show on Sunday night.
