Intoxicated cyclist without helmet on life support after striking car

NANAIMO, B.C. – A 28-year-old cyclist who was riding at night without a helmet or lights on his bicycle is fighting for his life after striking a car in Nanaimo, B.C.

RCMP Cpl. Norm Smith says the man who suffered massive head injuries was also intoxicated and is not expected to survive.

Smith says it was nearly impossible for the cyclist to be seen at 8 p.m. Friday because he was wearing dark clothing.

The man was also riding in heavy rain down a steep hill when he struck the right side of a vehicle.

Smith says the 36-year-old driver is traumatized by the incident and is receiving counselling.

Nanaimo RCMP are considering an awareness campaign for cyclists to ensure they take the proper precautions when heading out on the road, especially in the dark during rainy weather.
