Canadian swimmers could benefit after reports Peruvian tested positive

TORONTO – Canadian officials say they are aware of reports a Peruvian swimmer has tested positive for steroids at the Pan American Games but have not received word that he has been stripped of his silver medal, a move that would benefit Canada.

Canadian Zack Chertat’s bronze from the 200-metre butterfly would be upgraded to silver while teammate Alec Page would move up to third place if Mauricio Fiol is disqualified for testing positive for Stanozolol.

According to the Toronto Star, Fiol told a news conference Thursday that he did not take the steroid and was getting advice from the Peruvian Olympic Committee.

He has been expelled from the athletes village, the Star said.

It would be the first positive test of the Games.

Page called his fourth-place finish “bittersweet” but said he wasn’t going to get ahead of himself.

“I would be happy, but I’m going to hold back for now, just because nothing is official yet,” Page said at the pool Thursday night.
