KAMPALA, Uganda – A lawyer for Ugandan pop star and opposition figure Bobi Wine says the singer has been detained in his house on the outskirts of the capital, Kampala.
Medard Sseggona said Wednesday that Wine, a lawmaker who opposes Uganda’s longtime President Yoweri Museveni, is unable to leave his home.
Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, had been prevented from holding an Easter concert by police who called the event a risk to public safety.
Wine said on Facebook that his home was “under siege” by the military and police.
A police spokesman did not respond to questions.
Ugandan police frequently detain opposition leaders in their homes in what they call preventive arrest.
