Alabama funeral planned for journalist George Curry

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Funeral plans are set for George E. Curry, a journalist, civil rights activist and publisher whose syndicated column ran in hundreds of black-owned newspapers around the United States.

The Laurel, Maryland, resident died suddenly over the weekend. He was 69.

He is being laid to rest on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Rev. Al Sharpton is scheduled to give the eulogy at Weeping Mary Baptist Church. A public viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Friday.

Curry’s syndicated column was carried in more than 200 African American-owned newspapers, and he served two stints as editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a news service for black papers.

Curry was the first African-American to be elected president of the American Society of Magazine Editors.
