Police calls on the rise in Penticton as summer approaches

PENTICTON – As the busy tourist season approaches in Penticton, the local RCMP detachment is receiving more calls.

The detachment answered 380 calls last week in the region, including several reporting thefts of personal property and motor vehicles, RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says.

On Tuesday, May 24, clothing and change was stolen from a vehicle parked on Sudbury Avenue. Two locker thefts occurred at the Penticton Community Centre, with wallets containing debit and credit cards taken in both instances. The locker thefts occurred Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and police say at least one of the lockers was secured.

At 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, police noticed a man pushing a scooter across the Front Street bridge. They noticed the ignition had been tampered with and seized the scooter. Police are still waiting for the scooter’s owner to come forward.

During the day on Wednesday, a resident on Municipal Avenue reported his 2007 GMC had been broken into and $7,000 worth of tools taken.

The next day a black Ford F250 pickup truck was reported stolen from Integrity Auto Repair. The keys had been deposited in the key slot of the garage and were still there Thursday morning, May 26, at 9 a.m., but the truck was gone.

A break and enter was reported at a residence in the 3000-block of Carmi Road Thursday afternoon. The owner had been away for two days and came home to find his back door kicked in and a Honda 250 dirt bike, along with riding gear and four guns stolen.

On Saturday, May 28, a blue 2007 Ford Harley Davidson truck with fender flares was reported stolen from a residence in the 700-block of Government Street. The truck had Alberta licence plate BSD 2959.

Overnight Sunday, May 29, a black Motorino bike was taken from a parking garage on Main Street and a 2003 silver Dodge Caravan (licence plate BPK 3623) went missing from a residence in the 500-block of Ellis Street. The keys were believed to have been left in the vehicle.

The Buy the Sea Seafood on Main Street was broken into overnight Monday, May 30. The glass doors were smashed and a box of snow crab was taken from a freezer near the door. No money was taken from the business.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
