Rezoning could result in two new apartment blocks on Duncan Avenue West

PENTICTON  – Penticton City Council will look at a zoning amendment that would enable a pair of five storey apartments to be built on a vacant piece of Duncan Avenue property.

Council will be asked to approve an Official Community Plan amendment and rezoning of the property from General Commercial to Medium Density Residential at tonight’s council meeting, July 4.

The property, located at 151 Duncan Avenue West, is a 1.58 acre parcel located between The Hamlets senior care facility and the Shaw TV office building.

Two five storey apartment buildings with underground parking are proposed for the site. A total of 99 units would be built, consisting of a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom residential units.

The developer is also seeking a development variance permit to reduce the number of required parking stalls from 124 to 122.

A variance is also being requested to increase the number of small car stalls from 43 to 50, a move that would increase the allowable number of off-street parking spaces designations.

Should council approve first reading tonight, a public hearing will be scheduled for July 18, 2016.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
