WHL roundup: Blades find offence in third period to tip Cougars 5-2

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The Saskatoon Blades scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Prince George Cougars 5-2 in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday night.

Jordan Keller led the Blades (35-13-3-1) attack with two goals and an assist, while Spencer Shugrue, Charlie Wright and Egor Sidorov netted singles.

Zac Funk and Jaxsen Wiebe scored for the Cougars (24-23-4-0), who were tied 1-1 heading into the third. The Cougars outshot the visitors 21-17 at the CN Centre.

The Blades went 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-5.

BRANDON, Man. — Brady Birnie scored twice and Caleb Wyrostok added three assists as the visiting Swift Current Broncos outlasted the Brandon Wheat Kings 7-5.

Connor Hvidston, Grayson Burzynski, Josh Filmon, Mathew Ward and Josh Davies also scored for the Broncos (25-22-1-2).

Brett Hyland scored twice for the Wheat Kings (21-23-7-0), while Nate Danielson, Dawson Pasternak and Anthony Wilson netted singles.

THUNDERBIRDS 4 AMERICANS 2

SEATTLE, Wash. — Lucas Ciona scored twice, Brad Lambert had a goal and two assists and the Seattle Thunderbirds beat the visiting Tri-City Americans 4-2.

Mekai Sanders also scored for the Thunderbirds (39-9-1-1), who are listed No. 3 in this week’s Canadian Hockey League Top 10 rankings.

Ethan Ernst, with his 30th goal of the season, and Adam Mechura scored third-period goals for the Americans (25-20-4-2).

The Thunderbirds outshot the Americans 42-26. Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play.
