City of Vernon endorses maintaining a healthy urban environment
VERNON – At its Regular Meeting of July 11, 2016, Vernon City Council endorsed a declaration recognizing that people have the right to clean air, clean water, safe and healthy food and access to nature.
The declaration also states that people should know about pollutants in the environment and be able to participate in decision-making processes.
The Blue Dot movement is a nationwide effort that aims to amend Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms to include the right to a healthy environment. As part of this movement, residents from communities across Canada have requested their municipal governments formally recognize this right with a declaration.
Vernon’s Official Community Plan, which guides growth and development in the city, will be used as the guiding document for maintaining a healthy urban environment in Vernon.
