iN NUMBERS: The latest figures on B.C. wildfires

Everyone copes with the wildfire season a bit differently. Whether you’re tracking the numbers diligently or just trying to stay out of the smoke without thinking too hard about where it’s coming from, you might learn something new in the figures.

Here are the numbers:

  • 116: Wildfires are burning in B.C., according to the BC Wildfire Service.
  • 53: Wildfires in B.C. are listed as out of control by the BC Wildfire Service.
  • 9: Out of control fires are in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
  • 761: Wildfires have been extinguished this year so far.
  • 73: That’s how many evacuation orders and alerts are in place across the province.
  • 8,000: People are currently under evacuation orders.
  • 313,628: Hectares have burned this year so far.
  • 63,492: Hectares have burned in the Kamloops Fire Centre this year so far.
  • 300: Wildfire fighting personnel have come from Mexico to help B.C.
  • 1,399: Wildfire fighting personnel have been assigned.
  • 119: Firefighting aircraft have been assigned.
  • 176: Pieces of heavy equipment have been assigned.
  • 47: Per cent of fires this year have been human caused.
