‘Unprovoked’: Pitbull attacked by stray dog in Kelowna

A Kelowna woman was left with a $900 veterinarian bill after her dog was attacked Thursday night.

Tiana Stuart was walking her pitbull Pretty Girl on Ethel Street near Bernard Road around 10 p.m., July 13, when she says a large dog came running towards them.

Initially she wondered why the other dog was running loose without any owners nearby, and then shocked when she realized it was heading straight for Pretty Girl to initiate a fight.

“It was totally unprovoked, my dog wasn’t barking or anything, it saw us and came straight to us,” Stuart said.

It was especially unexpected because Stuart didn’t expect a bully breed to be the target of an attack, although the other dog was about twice the size of her 80 lb. canine.

Three men nearby noticed the commotion and ran over to help Stuart pry the larger dog off, which had managed to knock her to the ground in the process.

“You yell at a dog and expect it to stop and it just wouldn’t stop,” she said.

The attack lasted about a minute before the larger dog ran off towards Knox Mountain. She wondered if somebody might come running after it but nobody seemed to be looking for it.

Stuart assumes the larger dog has an owner because it was wearing a collar. She’s mostly concerned about other people and pets who aren’t as defensively capable as her 80-pound pitbull, so she hopes the owner can locate it as soon as possible.

She called dog control and was told that somebody has been assigned to the case.

Pretty Girl is expected to take two weeks to recover.
