VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps will not field a W-League women’s soccer team for the 2013 season, the club announced Friday.
Vancouver has been part of the W-League since 2001, winning titles in 2004 and 2006.
“The women’s landscape is evolving with the introduction of the new women’s professional league that will include many of the Canadian national team players,” said Whitecaps FC chief operating officer Rachel Lewis.
U.S. Soccer announced last month the formation of a new eight-team women’s league that will take 16 of Canada’s national team players — with the Canadian Soccer Association footing the bill for those players.
The league will kick off in the spring of 2013, with franchises in Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, western New York state and Washington, D.C.
