Penticton and area schools targeted in cyberattack

Penticton's school district is experiencing a district-wide network outage after having been targeted by a cyberattack.

Phones and email within the Okanagan Skaha school district are down, according to a media release from the district issued today, Feb. 14.

Despite the network outage, schools remain in operation.

The district is unable to provide a timeline at the moment for when the systems should be back online.

"The district is receiving support from the Ministry of Education and Child Care staff, Safer Schools Together, the local authorities and an expert cybersecurity incident service provider to get the support needed," the release read.

The release doesn't say if any school district data has been comprised in the cyberattack nor does it say if a ransom demand has been made.

District officials were not immediately available to comment.

As a political scientist interested in social justice issues and current events, I hold topics of
politics, inequalities, community news, arts, and culture close to my heart. I find myself
privileged to be reporting local news, because local journalism is where us citizens go to get
access to information and news that directly impact our livelihoods. That is what I love about
it; I believe journalism to be the most important part for our community to be aware,
informed, and tightly bonded by the knowledge of what is happening around us. I am a fierce
believer in journalism being the fourth power of a democracy because, famously, knowledge
is power, and journalism puts that power in the hands of our community so that we can
continue growing, building bonds between each other and continuously keep learning about
ourselves.
