Cash withdrawal denied during attempted ATM theft in Kelowna

KELOWNA FAMILY LOSES MOTORCYCLE GEAR IN THEFT FROM TRUCK

KELOWNA – A trio of suspects who tried to steal an ATM with a length of chain and a pick-up truck had their withdrawal denied Monday when the chain broke.

In a Crime Stoppers media release, Kelowna RCMP allege an early morning break-in at a coin laundry on Montgomery Road involved three suspects, gender unknown, who smashed a window before wrapping chains around the ATM and trying to drag it out of the building.

Surveillance video shows the hoodied trio pull up in a white Sierra crew cab and a black four-door SUV around 4:38 a.m. They wore gloves and bandanas while wrapping the chain around the cash machine.

When the chain broke, the hoodied trio lost their nerve and took off down Leathhead toward Highway 97. The white crew cab turned out to be stolen from a nursery on Paynter Road in West Kelowna.

Police say the 204 GMC Sierra crew cab had a license plate number of BG4812 and a VIN 1GTHK29U94E265345, and has not been recovered.

Another theft was more successful when on July 23, someone went through the back of a truck owned by a local family and stole an assortment of motorcycle gear.

RCMP say a man and his family were returning from a camping trip and stopped for ice cream at the McDonald’s restaurant on Highway 33 around 5 p.m.

Stolen were a pair of back Fox Comp5 dirt bike boots, size 11, a pair of red and black Fox dirt bike boots, size 8, a pair of red, yellow and black Fly motorcycle dirt bike pants, size 34.

John began life as a journalist through the Other Press, the independent student newspaper for Douglas College in New Westminster. The fluid nature of student journalism meant he was soon running the place, learning on the fly how to publish a newspaper.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kelowna he broke into the mainstream media, working for Okanagan Sunday, then the Kelowna Daily Courier and Okanagan Saturday doing news graphics and page layout. He carried on with the Kelowna Capital News, covering health and education while also working on special projects, including the design and launch of a mass market daily newspaper. After 12 years there, John rejoined the Kelowna Daily Courier as editor of the Westside Weekly, directing news coverage as the Westside became West Kelowna.

But digital media beckoned and John joined Kelowna.com as assistant editor and reporter, riding the start-up as it at first soared then went down in flames. Now John is turning dirt as city hall reporter for iNFOnews.ca where he brings his long experience to bear on the civic issues of the day.
